for real, this dude is crazy. came across this interview with GLK from 87sk’s tumblr earlier today and damn.
Where did the name “The Motherfucking Gaslamp Killer” come from?
I got my start deejaying in the gaslamp district of san diego. its where all the pretty people like to go to look at each other and get drunk in there button up silk shirts and high heel shoes. they dont go out to listen to music, the music is simply in the backround & “that outfit” or “thats my team” are whats important. So for the first 6 or 7 years of my musical life, i was being ignored / hated on by these fucking good looking jock morons & theyr cheerleader girlfriends.
i remember when blockbuster used to have video games you could play in the store and one time they had zombies ate my neighbors. i didn’t really “get” it. something about the game just rubbed me the wrong way/didn’t add up and i just said “fuck it”. so with that out there; here’s a few songs from the soundtrack to the game. zombies ate my neighbors.
for the most part i’m not so keen on all this ‘blog/electro/gritty/french-house’ kind of music. but every now and then i come across some that i like. fox n wolf is something that i like.
i came across a single of theirs in a record store a few years back and bought the record based off the cover art. it was the two of them wearing fox/wolf masks looking all creepy and shit. good enough for me. got home, put on the record and was like “DAAAMN” shit was tight. so here’s a song that wasn’t on that record i bought. enjoy.
i found this mp3 over at bigstereo earlier today and couldn’t help but notice how similar it sounds to fox n wolf. that girl’s voice is almost the same. kinda weird. then i got started thinking about fox n wolf and how much i used to like them. so right after this i’m making a post about them.
ok back to groove armada. i know nothing about them. i do know that they used to be on every down-tempo, chillout, ibiza, trip-hop compilation cd that was released from ‘97-’03. i think that’s where i first heard about them. when i was really in to trip-hop. i used to love that shit…maybe i’ll make a trip-hop post after that fox n wolf one…
anyway, i couldn’t find the original version of this song, just a couple remixes, but whatever. listen to this remix by the twelves and then listen to the fox n wolf song that’s about to get posted above. they kinda sound the same. kind of..
i don’t know who the hell this dert guy is or what he’s all about, but he likes bjork and so do i. although i don’t really follow, or even listen to her anymore, i can’t help but love her. bjork was one of the first artists that showed me there are no rules when it comes to music. like. no rules. none.
so here’s a track off the tape. samples one of bjork’s more popular songs “it’s oh so quiet”
if you’re a dj/producer/whatever and you haven’t checked out ccMixter yet, you probably should jump on that. its a creative commons audio site full of royalty free samples from all sorts of musicians. they have contests and lots of cool shit for you to do. i got a bunch of random samples from there a while back and every now and then i throw something in to the mix and see if it works. conveniently the vocal track from Christopher Willits’ song Color Shifting fit my track pretty well and i kept it. i still haven’t listened to the original, but i’m pretty pleased with my remix. soooooo check it out!
I caught deastro on accident at the hamtramck blowout this year and was really surprised at the amount of awesome in his set because all the acts I saw before made my brain cry. dude was straight playing the drums to his computer with a mic hooked up, all he needed was some cymbals strapped to his knees and it would have been ON! He posted 3 eps on his blog so go get them!
before i found this album i was convinced the only noteworthy thing to come out of la was our friend ‘little joey’ here, but apparently i was wrong and people over there know how to make music too. this was just a random grab at the record store the other day, but definitely a good find. i can’t stop listening to this track by exile, i just want blu to come out and drop a verse or something…
You gotta have respect for adult swim once again dropping another great free compilation. Sometimes I wonder how adult swim still survives in a modern environment that usually doesn’t allow for creativity, but its been how long? 5 years or something? This chapter of the series features Ann Arbor’s own Ghostly International. The flyamsam and deastro tracks are especially noteworthy.
